OUR STORY
Small Beer is for the big thinkers.
We are reinvigorating a lost tradition for the people who do it all. Those who think big for their tomorrow, who seek quality of ingredients & conversation, who challenge the existing and embrace innovation. For us, big thinking means pioneering a new process of brewing. We have built a bespoke brewing kit to exclusively produce lower alcohol beer - up to 2.8% ABV – the world's first dedicated small beer brewery.
OUR BESPOKE DESIGN AND ONE-OF-A-KIND BREWING KIT
We make our beer with only the finest ingredients and natural carbonation. Our beers also spend a minimum of 6 weeks lagering in vessel to give them their undeniably clean yet pronounced flavour profiles.
Our brewing kit allows us to brew our beer to strength, so that we don't need to remove the alcohol in any way. Instead we take the time and care to maximise flavour over alcohol creation.
You won’t see any vacuum distilling, reverse osmosis, filtration, processing, added stabilisers, arrested fermentation, clarifiers, isinglass, in our process.
Just the traditional brewing grains: malted barley, oats, rye, wheat, alongside water, hops & yeast!
"Much like making bread...brewing great beer is a process of time, care and attention."
FELIX JAMES, CO-FOUNDER
WE USE TWICE THE TYPICAL AMOUNT OF INGREDIENTS PER PERCENTAGE POINT BREWED
You might think we use fewer ingredients to brew to a lower strength, but that's far from the truth! We source only the best quality malt and hop varieties and use twice the typical amount of ingredients per percentage point brewed.
"Grounding each step within the craftsmanship of old, SMALL BEER ® is rooted in history, but made for today."
JAMES GRUNDY, CO-FOUNDER
ROOTED IN HISTORY, MADE FOR TODAY
In a world where drinking water could be fatal, small beer was enjoyed in households, workplaces and even schools across the country for its hydrating and nutritional properties. A staple of British daily life in the 1700’s, it was traditionally always brewed between 0.5 - 2.8% ABV.
With the provision of clean drinking water in the 19th century, the requirement for small beer passed and the art of its creation was lost.
At Small Beer Brew Co. we specialise solely in the production of this historic beer so rich in history!
