Introducing our new series, Behind The Brew, where we shine a light on the incredible people who make Small Beer what it is. Every team member plays a unique role, each a vital cog in the Small Beer machine, working differently but coming together to craft something truly special.
To kick things off, we spoke with Florence Mills, one of our brilliant Sales Managers,
Karaoke queen and social butterfly: Flossie is always up for a laugh and a party! Her social skill set and eye for detail sees her very well placed to look after our all important retail partners in Ocado, Majestic Wine and Waitrose. From promo planning to cross-category partnerships, she always has a keen eye for SMALL BEER on store shelves
What brought you to Small Beer?
Straight out of university I started working in the premium cheese industry, supplying some of London's best restaurants and hotels with fantastic cheese. I loved working in the food and beverage industry and building relationships with On-Trade customers. This led me to Small Beer, working in prestige sales, continuing building those relationships but now with beer instead of cheese!
What's the best thing about working here? What do you enjoy most day-to-day?
One of the best things about working in Small Beer is the team. Working with like-minded, passionate people is so energising and fun. And also getting to drink Small Beer every day makes coming to work very easy.
What is your favourite highlight of 2025?
The Mid-Strength March this year definitely stands out. Seeing so many people celebrating mid-strength beer, marching across London was amazing, and sharing the day with our team, friends, family, and even a marching band made it unforgettable.
Could you share one piece of advice you can share about going into Sales?
I would say it's important to focus on listening more than talking. People are looking for solutions to their problems and the best way to understand this is to listen carefully. Ask thoughtful questions and tailor your approach based on what the customer tells you.
How would you say gender roles affect your work in this industry?
Being a woman in a male dominated industry can be challenging at times, but I'm so proud to be a part of the all-female sales team at Small Beer, something quite rare. We support each other and share advice, which makes navigating those challenges much easier and proves women can thrive in beer!
If you could share a Small Beer with anyone, dead or alive, who would it be and why?
This might seem a little random but perhaps the cheesemaker Thelma Adams. I learnt about her whilst researching women in cheese. She is the founder of Caws Cenarth and famously protested milk quotas in the 80s by sitting in a bathtub full of milk dressed as Cleopatra. She’s iconic, fearless, and sounds like a lot of fun. Someone I’d love to toast a Small Beer with!
Tell us your BIG DREAM.
One day I would love to open my own deli and sell the best British food and drinks on offer, particularly cheese and, obviously, Small Beer.
